After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be Safety First:

  • Is it safe to stay in the house? Or is it safer for you to vacate?
  • Slip and fall is one of the top safety hazards along with electrical.
  • Only perform activities that are safe for you and others.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy, do not strain yourself trying to do it alone. Be careful!

What To Do After Flooding

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting. (if it’s safe for you to do so)
  • Remove and/or prop up wet upholstery and cushions and dry quickly to prevent damage.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for faster maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting before the color bleeds.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather/remove loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods away from affected area.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other electrical household appliances. (Remove if possible)
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging. (Safety First)
